Round 6 Match Preview: Sea Eagles vs Titans

There’s no place like home, they say.

In the case of the mighty Sea Eagles, it is the revamped 4 Pines Park. And boy, doesn’t the old girl look fantastic now after the opening of the new Bob Fulton Stand and Centre of Excellence at our last home game. That was a magical Sunday night!

So this Saturday, the Sea Eagles will be looking to record their third home game win of the 2022 Telstra Premiership.

The first was a nail-biting 13-12 win over the Bulldogs and the second, a 25-6 victory over the Canberra Raiders at our much-loved regional ‘home’ ground of Glen Willow Stadium in Mudgee. Or, ‘Brookvale West’ as some cheeky Manly Members call it.

This time around, our away opponents are those big Titans from the Gold Coast. The ‘Glitter Strip’ boys are coming down for a taste of ‘God’s Country’ on the magnificent Northern Beaches.

There’s nothing like playing at home. The familiar surroundings, the tribalism of your own passionate Members, and for the players, the opportunity to play in front of family. You just get that sense of pride and belonging!

However, sometimes in rugby league, strange records can be set. The home ground advantage we all crave for can just eerily disappear.

For example, just look at the winning record for the Sea Eagles and the Titans since 2012 when they have played each other away from their traditional home grounds.

Over the past decade, the Titans have beaten Manly at Brookvale in 2012, 2018, 2019, and 2020.

The Return to 4 Pines Park

The last time Manly beat the Gold Coast on the Northern Beaches was round 19, 2013 – a 38-20 victory on a Sunday afternoon in July.

On the other hand, the Sea Eagles have won their past five matches at the Titans home ground on the Gold Coast, claiming victory in 2012, 2014, 2017, 2019, and 2021.

Match Highlights: Titans v Sea Eagles

The last time the Titans beat Manly on the Gold Coast was round 15, 2016 – a 30-10 win as part of the old Monday Night Football.

Sure, there were regional ‘home’ games played in Gladstone (won by hosts Gold Coast) and in Mudgee (won by hosts Manly), so you can excuse that pattern as they were not played on their true home turf.

Furthermore, of the last 10 games played between the two clubs since 2015, the honours have been shared at five apiece.

It all makes for another intriguing game this Saturday.

You can play your part Manly Members by again coming out in force and lifting your Sea Eagles to victory to help end this bizarre run of stats.

After all, records are meant to be broken.
