REWIND: Manly Warringah Sea Eagles vs Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs

A snapshot of the history between the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in our 80th Anniversary season.

Head-to-Head

The Sea Eagles have enjoyed a healthy winning record over Canterbury-Bankstown since their first clash in 1947.

Of the 140 matches, Manly have won 75 to Canterbury’s 60.

Manly hold a 39-21 winning record at Brookvale but the Bulldogs come out on top when it comes to matches at their traditional home ground at Belmore, with a 21-16 record.

At this Saturday night’s venue of Accor Stadium, Homebush, the Sea Eagles have won 10 of the 19 matches played there since 1999.

Biggest winning margin

It wasn’t that long ago since Manly recorded their biggest ever winning margin over the Bulldogs, with a 66-0 victory at Parramatta (now CommBank Stadium) in 2021.

On this glorious day for the Sea Eagles, full-back Tom Trbojevic and winger Jason Saab ran riot with three tries each.

Reuben Garrick and Toff Sipley also crossed for doubles with Kark Lawton also scoring in a game that saw the Sea Eagles lead 36-0 at half-time.

Garrick finished the day with 30 points from two tries and a perfect 11 goals from 11 attempts.

Current Manly Head Coach Kieran Foran played five-eighth in the huge win under former premiership winning coach Des Hasler.

The 66-point margin beat the previous best of 38 set at Brookvale in 1954 in Manly’s 45-7 win over Canterbury.

Most points scored in a match

This one wasn’t hard to guess.

It had to be Garrick after his 30-point haul in the above game in 2021.

He beat the 1954 record set by winger Ron Rowles’s four tries and nine goals in the 45-7 win under Coach Ray Norman.

Most tries scored in a match

We again go back to that 66-0 crushing win in 2021 when the Sea Eagles ran in 11 incredible tries.

It beat the previous record of nine. Guess what game that was? Yes, it was that 45-7 win in 1954.

Most goals scored in a match

Of course, it belongs to none another than Garrick with his perfect 11 from 11 in the 66-0 thrashing.

Garrick’s effort that day also sees him hold the record for most individual goals kicked in a match against the Bulldogs.

Most field goals scored in a match

This is an interesting one!

Manly has kicked two field goals twice in two matches against Canterbury.

Both came in 1968 too. Manly five-eighth/captain Bob Fulton and half-back Frank Stanton kicked one each in a 25-12 win at Brookvale Oval.

The second came through the boot of Fulton and half-back Dennis Ward in a 9-4 victory at the Sydney Sports Ground.

Most individual points scored in a match

Wingers Ron Rowles and Reuben Garrick share this record with 30 points each.

Rowles achieved his feat through his four tries and nine goals in the 45-7 win in 1954.

Garrick joined him in the record books against Canterbury with his two tries and 11 goals in the 66-0 win in 2021.

Most individual tries scored in a match

Three Manly players share this record after scoring four tries each in matches against Canterbury.

Ron Rowles was the first in 1954 before winger Tom Mooney joined him in 1979 in Manly’s 23-11 win at Brookvale.

Magical half-back Phil Blake joined the pair in 1983 in Manly’s 36-2 win at Brookvale.

Longest winning streak

Manly’s longest winning streak against Canterbury stands at seven games.

The record ran from August 11, 2018, to March 27, 2022.
