In our 80th Anniversary season, we head down memory lane to look at the history between the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles and South Sydney Rabbitohs ahead of Thursday night’s match at 4 Pines Park.
Head-to-Head
Since 1947, the two clubs have played 152 premiership matches between them with Manly holding a 79-73 winning record.
At Brookvale, the Sea Eagles have won 35 of the 59 matches played there.
Biggest winning margin
You must go back to round 22, 1975, for this one.
The Sea Eagles put on a masterclass performance in a 54-0 drubbing at Brookvale Oval under coach Frank Stanton.
A crowd of over 11,000 fans saw Manly captain and five-eighth Bob Fulton score two tries alongside half-back Steve Symonds and second-rower Mark Willoughby.
Bill Clare, Graham Eadie, Phil Lowe and Daryl Pierce also crossed for tries with Eadie kicking 12 from 15 goals.
From this match, the following club records for Manly against Souths still stand today:
- Most points scored in a match (54)
- Most tries scored in a match (10)
- Most goals kicked in a match (12)
- Most Individual points scored in a match (Graham Eadie, 27)
- Most field goals scored in a match
Manly has twice kicked a record four field goals in a match against Souths.
The first was through the boots of Bob Fulton (2), Fred Jones, and Dennis Ward in a 25-15 win in the match of the round at the SCG in 1968.
The second came two years later, also at the SCG, when Fulton kicked another two. Ward and Bob Batty landed one each.
Fulton is also the only Manly player to have kicked two field goals in four different games against Souths.
Most individual tries scored in a match
Four Manly players hold the club record against Souths with four tries each.
Three of them were wingers in Len Wadling (1962), John Hopoate (1996), and Akuila Uate (2017).
The only forward to achieve four tries against Souths was second-rower Steve Menzies (1996).
Viva Las Vegas
The Sea Eagles made history in Las Vegas on March 3, 2024, when they became the first NRL team to record a premiership win in America at the magnificent Allegiant Stadium.
The historic double header saw the Sea Eagles score six tries to five in a 36-24 victory after leading 12-10 at half-time.
Five-eighth Luke Brooks scored a try in his club debut for the Sea Eagles in front of a crowd of 40,746.
Lachlan Croker, Reuben Garrick, Haumole Olakau’atu, Jason Saab and Ben Trbojevic also crossed for tries. Garrick had a superb day with the boot, kicking six goals (from six) through the spectacular yellow posts.
