Match Report: Ron Massey Cup Round 8 vs Blacktown Workers

Manly Leagues suffered a heavy 38-12 loss to Blacktown Workers on Saturday night in the Ron Massey Cup.

Trailing 18-0 at half-time at HE Laybutt Field, the Sea Eagles rallied in the second half before the home side pulled away for a comfortable victory to leave Manly Leagues winless after eight rounds.

Blacktown Workers opened the scoring in the fifth minute when hooker Tauinaola Samu crossed near the posts for a 6-0 lead.

The Workers then enjoyed some good fortune when Manly winger Munga Baruani threw a pass straight to defending Blacktown centre William Afualo to score after bringing the ball back from a bomb to give the home side a 12-0 lead after 36 minutes.

Two minutes later, Blacktown prop Tayson Fakaos crashed through three defenders to score for an 18-0 lead at half-time.

The home side stretched their lead to 28-0 after 50 minutes through two tries in two minutes to winger Jack Piccirilli.

The Sea Eagles then got on the board when full-back Braith Alexander split the defence from a scrum win to race away to score under the posts for a 28-6 scoreline after 57 minutes.

Manly went back-to-back when giant prop Miles Edler crashed over next to the posts four minutes later for a 28-12 scoreline.

Blacktown half-back James Valevatu then crossed after stripping the ball of Alexander from a kick for a 34-12 lead after 72 minutes.

Piccirilli then grabbed his hat-trick when he leapt high to defuse a crossfield kick for a 38-12 lead.

The Sea Eagles now play Glebe Dirty Reds in a home game at Lionel Watts Park, Belrose, on Sunday, May 31, at 3pm.
