In our 80th Anniversary season, we take a trip down memory lane ahead of Sunday’s match between the Sea Eagles and the Penrith Panthers.

Head-to-Head vs Penrith

The Sea Eagles have won 54 of the 98 matches played since their first clash with the Panthers in 1967.

Biggest winning margin

What a magical day this was for defending premiers Manly in 1973, winning by a huge 63 points, a club record that still stands today against the Panthers.

The Sea Eagles ran in a massive 14 tries in a 70-7 thrashing of the Panthers at Penrith Park with half-back Johnny Mayes scoring four tries.

Centres Alan Thompson and Bob Fulton also had big games with ‘Thommo’ crossing for a hat-trick and ‘Bozo’ a double.

Max Brown, John Bucknall, Ian Martin and Peter Peters also crossed for tries.

Most points scored in a match

Yep, you guessed it. The 70 against the Panthers in 1973!

It sits second on the list for most points by Manly in a match behind the 78 scored against Qld Country in the old KB Cup in 1983.

Most tries in a match

Manly fans would have certainly been doing the ‘Eagle Rock’ after seeing a whopping 14 tries in that famous 1973 win over Penrith.

With Daddy Cool’s famous song released just two years earlier, it’s fair to say many were singing along to their all-time unofficial victory song.

‘Now listen
Oh we're steppin' out
I'm-a turn around
Gonna turn around once
And we'll do the Eagle Rock’

Most goals in a match against Penrith

It couldn’t be anything else!

The legendary Graham Eadie holds this record after kicking 14 from 16 goals in that famous 1973 win over Penrith.

It remains a club record today for most goals ever in a match.

Most individual points against Penrith

Surely, you would have guessed this one by now!

Yes, the great Graham Eadie left Penrith Park in 1973 with a personal haul of 28 points in that 70-7 win.

And that’s just from 14 goals.

Most tries scored in a match against Penrith

What do Ken Irvine, Tom Mooney and Tommy Talua have in common?

Yes, all three scored four tries each playing on the wing against Penrith.

Irvine did it in 1971, Mooney in 1976, and Talau in 2024.

Johnny Mayes is the only other player to share the record of four tries in a match, and he did it as a half-back in 1973.

Dare we say, what’s the chances of a Manly winger scoring this Sunday night?

Most field goals against Penrith

Manly’s greatest ever player, Bob Fulton, appears twice in this list with three field goals in two matches.
