Harold Matthews Cup

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles suffered a 20-10 loss to the Balmain Tigers in Round 7 of the Harold Matthews Cup at 4 Pines Park.

The Sea Eagles got off to a flying start when centre Jack Smith went over untouched after a superb flick pass from winger Tom Langland in a two man tackle for a 6-0 lead.

Balmain hit back three minutes with a try before the Tigers crossed again for a 10-6 lead after 24 minutes.

Some nice play from Manly full-back Carlito Vesely and centre Harry Smythe saw winger Cooper Eveleigh cross in the corner to make it 10-all at half-time.

The Tigers then scored two more tries to take victory.

Manly now play the St George Dragons at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation, Narrabeen, on Sunday, March 29, at 1pm.

SG Ball Cup

The Sea Eagles recorded their fifth win of the season under Coach Lachlan Croker with a 28-16 victory over the Balmain Tigers in round seven.

Three first half tries saw Manly take a 16-10 lead into half-time before going on with the job at 4 Pines Park.

Manly opened the scoring in the sixth minute when winger Quinn Timperon finished off a nice backline shift to dive over in the right corner for a 4-0 lead.

Nine minutes later, Manly jumped to a 10-0 lead when hooker Ashton Large dived over from dummy half following a barnstorming run by prop Freddie Benson-Sparkes.

Two tries in eight minutes to Balmain saw the Tigers draw level at 10-all before Manly half-back Beau Alexander dived on a spilt kick to score next to the posts for the 16-10 lead at the break.

Six minutes after half-time, the Sea Eagles jumped to a 22-10 lead when a low pass from Alexander was well picked up by Oscar Crotty for the winger to score out wide.

A try to the Tigers five minutes later reduced the margin to six before Benson-Sparkes used his strength to dive over from dummy half for a 28-16 lead after 57 minutes.

The Sea Eagles dug deep in the last 13 minutes to take a well-deserved victory to sit in sixth place on the ladder.

Manly now play the St George Dragons at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation, Narrabeen, on Sunday, March 29, at 2.30pm.
