Manly greats honoured on Sunday

Arko, Cliffy, Fatty, Maxy, Beaver, Zorba, Snake, and more.

A record number of past players will attend his year’s ‘old boys’ day in the Club’s 80th anniversary season.

Manly Members and fans will get a chance to pay tribute to our Golden Eagles when they do their traditional lap of honour before our Round 21 clash against the Sharks.

This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever, as it should, marking eight proud decades of maroon and white. 

There will be players present whose careers span eight decades since Manly’s entry to the competition in 1947.

Jason King will be one of many Manly premiership winners at 4 Pines Park on Sunday, alongside others on the ‘Manly royalty’ honour roll.

Also in attendance will be Ken Arthurson, Cliff Lyons, Steve Menzies, Max Krilich, Peter Peters, Paul Vautin, Michael O’Connor, Alan Thompson, Geoff Toovey, Brett Stewart, and the list goes on.

While King has taken part in many Golden Eagles Rounds over the years, this one will be a little different.  It will be his first Golden Eagles Round as Manly CEO.

“This is a really special day for our Club, as it is every year,” said King.

“Golden Eagles Round is one of the most important occasions on our club calendar.

It’s a chance to celebrate and thank the individuals who helped build the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles into the proud club we have today.

“It takes on even greater significance in our 80th anniversary season and we are thrilled that we will have a record number of past players and officials joining us.

“We are planning to make this a wonderful day for the Club.”

The winning team will take possession of the Steve Rogers Memorial Trophy. A Cronulla legend, Rogers played in the 1973 grand final loss to the Sea Eagles and then captained the Sharks in the 1978 grand final and grand final replay against Manly.

Also up for grabs are a couple of momentous milestones for Manly. The Club is chasing its 1000th victory, and 500th win at 4 Pines Park.

The match kicks off at 4:05pm and is part of a triple-header at 4 Pines Park with Manly playing the Sharks in the Jersey Flegg Cup (11:45am) and Newtown Jets in the NSW Cup (1:30pm).
