Match Preview: Round 27 vs Warriors

A full house is expected at 4 Pines Park on Friday night when the Sea Eagles take on the Warriors in their final home game of the season.

Manly needs a minor miracle to qualify for the finals, but that won’t stop the turnstiles ticking over for what will be a historic night for the club.  And there are plenty of good reasons to be a part of it

The top eight, highly unlikely, but mathematically possible.

The last time Daly Cherry-Evans pulls on a Manly jersey at Brookie.

The first time Joey Walsh pulls on a Manly jersey at Brookie.

The Warriors could still be in the hunt for a place in the top four.

Let’s first talk about the minor miracle.  The Sea Eagles must thump the Warriors, needing an 82-point turnaround on points differential with the Roosters, who would need to suffer a heavy loss to Souths in the second game on Friday night.

But wait, there’s more.  Manly would then need the Dolphins to lose to the Raiders on Sunday. Simple as that.

Daly Cherry-Evans’ final game at Brookie is sure to draw plenty of attention with thousands of Members and fans wanting to be on hand for his final fling.

There will also be a lot of interest in Joey Walsh, the local junior who is making his NRL debut.

When DCE made his NRL debut with Manly in 2011, Walsh was just four years of age.  And here they are fourteen years later lining up in the same team.

It will be their first, and most likely their last, game together. Cherry-Evans will make his 352nd appearance for Manly while Walsh suits up for his first.

It will be a farewell at the fortress for a legend of the game as we usher in a teen from ‘Curly’ who went to school across the road.

Friday will also be a chance for the Manly faithful to farewell a few other players who will be departing the club at season’s end.

The Sea Eagles arrive at Round 27 having scored 98 points in their last two games with big wins over both the Dolphins and Dragons.

The Warriors have dropped out of the top four after losing four of their past six games but are locked in for a place in the finals.

When these teams met back in Round 2 in Auckland, the Warriors ran in six tries to three, to collect a 36-16 victory.

The Aucklanders’ last win at Brookvale was five years ago while Manly have won the three most recent contests at 4 Pines Park.

In team news the Sea Eagles are without Tolu Koula (knee) with Clayton Faulalo replacing him in the centres.

Nineteen-year-old halfback Joey Walsh will make his NRL debut off the bench, with one other place on the bench still to be confirmed following the withdrawal of Toafofoa Sipley (four-game suspension).

Just the one change for the Warriors with Sam Healey taking over at hooker from Wayde Egan (hip).
