Match Report: Jersey Flegg Cup Round 10 vs Roosters

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles’ Jersey Flegg Cup side were defeated 24-10 by the Sydney Roosters in round 10 action at Wentworth Park this afternoon.

Tries at either side of half-time helped keep the Sea Eagles in the match but the Roosters were just too strong, with two tries in each half enough to hold on for a 14-point victory. The defeat is Manly’s sixth of the season.

The Roosters opened the scoring after 22 minutes with a try next to the posts through lock Zack Visconti for a 6-0 lead.

Winger Kade Maguire doubled the Roosters’ lead with a try in the left corner off the back of a smart offload, pushing the scoreline out to 12-0 after 30 minutes.

The Sea Eagles scored on the stroke of half-time, with a handy intercept from centre Matari Donovan at the halfway mark helping his side get points on the board. The try was unconverted, cutting the deficit to 12-4.

A scuffle before the siren resulted in both teams having a player sin-binned, with Ethan Roberts of the Roosters and Josh Clark of the Sea Eagles starting the second half on the sideline. Manly were awarded a penalty and converted a penalty goal for a 12-6 scoreline at half-time.

Manly kicked the second half off in emphatic fashion and scored after four minutes through Travis May. The half-back chased in support and took a pass on the sideline by Antonio Taufa before racing away to take the score to 12-10.

The Roosters bounced back in the 55th minute as Maguire grabbed his second of the day after a quick shift to the left edge, pushing their lead back out to 18-10.

A strong run from Munga Baruani set the side up for a big chance in the 71st minute after the Manly winger broke through the defence with a 45-metre run. Unfortunately the ball was kicked dead moments later, bringing the play to a halt.

The Roosters capitalised on the seven-tackle set and stormed downfield to score their fourth try of the day through Roberts, extending their lead to the final scoreline of 24-10.

All teams in the Jersey Flegg Cup have a bye next week, with Manly’s next fixture being against the Parramatta Eels in round 12. The match kicks off at 1pm at Kellyville Park.
