Manly Warringah Sea Eagles today proudly launched an important new national health campaign with Club Chairman Scott Penn.

Penn, the Chief Executive of SP Health, was joined by Sea Eagles players Daly Cherry-Evans, Martin Taupau, Blake Green, and Frank Winterstein, for the Weight Check 2017 launch at Narrabeen.

Weight Check 2017, an initiative developed by leading online health solution provider, SP Health and sponsored by Australian Bananas, aims to help Australians better understand their current weight and take action towards living a healthier life.

The Sea Eagles are behind this important initiative with Weight Check booths at their home game against Penrith Panthers at Lottoland on Saturday 2 September.

Adults are encouraged to check and register their weight at www.weightcheck.com.au.

The free online tool helps you to determine if your weight is in the healthy zone. It also predicts how your weight could creep up over time, and offers tips to maintain a healthy weight.

The campaign also aims to raise money for the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. Weight Check will make a donation to the Garvan Institute whose research aims to understand the circumstances under which obesity can lead to diabetes, with the goal of improving the way we predict, prevent and treat metabolic disease.

“Despite growing community awareness about the need for healthier habits, Australians aren’t as concerned as they should be about putting on weight,’’ Penn said.

“Most people think it’s normal to gain weight, especially over winter, and dismiss the long-term impact these extra kilos have on a person’s health.”

The inaugural Weight Check event will take place on Father’s Day, Sunday 3 September. “The best Father’s Day gift parents can give their kids is to live longer, healthier lives,” Penn said.

After his own weight loss experience, as well as being a father, Penn is committed to encouraging others to be more aware and concerned about weight creep and, most importantly, take action.

“I understand how hard it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but if you eat on the run and don’t find time for healthy activities, you are at greatest risk of weight creep,'' Penn said.

“The goal is to help everyone understand how many kilos it takes to tip the scales towards being overweight or obese, so you can act now before it starts to affect your health.”

Australian Bananas is proud to support this national campaign. To promote Weight Check 2017, commuters at select train stations will receive an Australian banana on the way to work on Friday 1 September.

Registrations for Weight Check 2017 are now open and participants can register their weight throughout the year to monitor their progress.
