Shaun Lane loved every moment of being an ’80 minute’ player against Penrith last Saturday night.
Promoted into the starting team after originally being named on the interchange bench, Lane produced an impressive performance in just his second career game for the Sea Eagles after applying his trade for Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles throughout the season.
Lane used his giant frame to run 157 metres and make 39 tackles, as well as producing a superb one handed offload for Tom Trbojevic to score in the loss to Penrith.
Manly Coach Trent Barrett rewarded Lane for his efforts by naming him to start again in the second-row for Sunday’s clash against the Wests Tigers at Lottoland.
For Lane, the former Bulldogs and Warriors forward knows the opportunity is there to cement a permanent place in the back-row following the loss of Curtis Sironen and Lewis Brown through injuries.
Brown is tipped to return in round 21 from a knee injury and Sironen in round 26 from a pectoral injury.
“I need to be consistent with my performances. As a back-rower, you want to play 80 minutes,’’ Lane said today.
“It is all about being solid in defence. I just have to work together with my inside players and with ‘Chez’ (Daly Cherry-Evans) and the rest of the right edge.”
Prop Lloyd Perrett said his former Bulldogs team-mate now has the chance to produce his best for Manly.
“I know what he is capable of and I guess he hasn’t had that freedom (in the past) to play. We are at a club now where we have really good coaches and they make us confident in our ability,’’ Perrett said.
“They give us that free reign to do what we do and it came off for Shaun against Penrith. He played really well.”
Fellow prop Darcy Lussick was impressed with Lane’s efforts against the Panthers.
“He got through a lot of work. For such a big bloke, he was still going pretty strong at the end,’’ Lussick said.
“With Curtis out, it was a big loss but ‘Laney’ has come in and is doing a good job for us.”
