Manly Warringah Sea Eagles and the Sydney Roosters will do battle for the annual Community Cup at Central Coast Stadium on Saturday, February 18.
Sea Eagles Coach Trent Barrett and Sydney Roosters Coach Trent Robinson are expected to field close to their strongest sides with the trial match being the final hit out of the pre-season for both clubs.
The Community Cup was first played in 2015 with the Roosters taking the honours. The event did not take place last year due to the Sydney Roosters’ participation in the World Club Series.
This year, the Sea Eagles and the Roosters are proud to partner with Regional Youth Support Services (RYSS) as the nominated charity for the Community Cup.
RYSS is a leading, locally based youth specific charity service, delivering frontline youth support and innovative engagement strategies to young people between the ages of 12 and 25, and their families in communities throughout the Central Coast.
Manly Warringah Sea Eagles CEO Tim Cleary said the club was pleased to return to the Central Coast.
“The Sea Eagles have had a long association with the Central Coast, and the club continues to support the local community,’’ Cleary said.
“This will be a quality trial match. I know Trent will be looking for a strong performance from his players as it will our biggest hit out before our opening premiership game of the season.
“It promises to be a great day of rugby league with three games being played and I encourage Sea Eagles members and supporters to again turn out in force to not only support the team, but also a great charity in RYSS.”
Sydney Roosters CEO John Lee said he was pleased the Community Cup was back on in 2017.
“The Roosters have strong ties to the community and the Central Coast, as do the Sea Eagles, and we are pleased to provide an outlet for important causes to gain exposure via rugby league and the Community Cup,’’ Lee said.
“RYSS play an important role for locally-based youth on the Central Coast, and hopefully this trial will provide a strong platform whereby their important messages can gain exposure.”
Kim McLoughry, RYSS CEO, said it was an honour to be the nominated charity partner.
“Regional Youth Support Services have 30 years’ experience in assisting young people on the Central Coast. We are very honoured to be the charity partner for this trial match,’’ McLoughry said.
“The youth are inspired by their sporting heroes and the Sea Eagles’ links to the Central Coast go back to the days of Graham Eadie, a young Woy Woy junior who played for Manly, NSW and Australia.”
Central Coast Council’s Group Leader of Business, Assets and Infrastructure, Mike Dowling, said it was great to see top flight rugby league back at Central Coast Stadium.
“Both Manly and the Sydney Roosters have been wonderful supporters of junior rugby league and the wider Central Coast community through development programs, sponsorship and events like the Community Cup,’’ Dowling said.
“This is a great initiative that will once again, showcase Central Coast Stadium as a fantastic sporting venue.
“After a long off-season, I’d be encouraging all rugby league fans to get to the game and show your support for these two great clubs and Regional Youth Support Services.”
