Remember the name, Chol Chol. It could be well on the minds of most rugby league fans at Pittwater Park come this Saturday night.
Who? Did you say Chol Chol?
Yes, an 18-year-old Sudanese boy with the same Christian name and surname!
And according to Ipswich Jets co-Coach Shane Walker, this kid could well cut loose when the Ipswich Jets take on the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at Pittwater Park at 6pm in the final pre-season trial for both teams.
“You watch out for this, Chol Chol,’’ Walker explained in pointing out players to keep an eye out on.
“He is a winger, very slightly built. He has got footwork I’ve certainly haven’t seen before.
“It is just ridiculous the way he moves.”
So who is Chol Chol?
“Chol’s family moved from Sudan to New Zealand when he was a young boy for a fresh start. And he ended up going to Wesley College in Auckland, the same school as the great Jonah Lomu,’’ Walker said.
“He played union for a while before taking up league in Year 11. Chol ended up at Ipswich High on a scholarship and he is now with the Jets.
“This is his second year of playing rugby league. He has plenty of raw, untapped ability.
“Chol scored two of our five tries in our trial against Burleigh Bears last weekend. He also made a couple of line breaks.”
As to how fast Chol Chol is, Walker was quick to point this fact out.
“We have this young guy here named Josh Robinson who won’t be playing against Manly. Josh was training for the Commonwealth Games but has since switched to rugby league with the Jets,’’ Walker said.
“Josh recorded a time of 10.7 seconds for the 100m, and 46 seconds for the 400m. They had a match race at training the other day and Chol got a good half metre on him.
“I think people will be very surprise to see just how fast Chol is. He could well light up Pittwater Park.”
The only way supporters can see Chol Chol take on the Sea Eagles is to be at Pittwater Park. The match will not be shown on TV and there is no live streaming of the game.
