The Sea Eagles have claimed victory in their first pool match in the Auckland Nines, defeating the Cowboys 17-8.

In an entertaining 18 minutes of football, the Sea Eagles scored three tries to ensure an important win at Eden Park.

Sea Eagles halfback and captain Daly Cherry-Evans was instrumental, steering his side around the park as they ran rings around the Cowboys defensive line.

The crowd were on their feet mid-way through the first half when coach Geoff Toovey injected club legend Steve Menzies into the game.

With a number of solid runs and impressive defensive efforts, Menzies’ contribution proved effective.

David Williams opened his side’s account early, before Peta Hiku danced around defenders to extend the margin to 10 points.

The Cowboys scored on the stroke of half time through Kyle Feldt , who showed a great deal of skill to plant the ball down inside the corner post.

Despite only leading by six at the break, the Sea Eagles always looked in control, and within a few minutes, the maroon and whites scored through Cheyse Blair to ensure the win.

The Cowboys managed to score on the full time hooter, but it was nothing but a consolation as the Sea Eagles ran out 17-8 winners.
