Dylan Walker is ‘unlikely’ to return from a hand injury for Sunday’s clash against the Newcastle Knights.
Walker has missed the last two victories over the Warriors and South Sydney and remains in doubt for the match at Brookvale Oval.
“He trained yesterday and got through a ball work session and a little bit of defensive stuff. We will have to wait and see how his hand pulls up,’’ Coach Trent Barrett said today.
“It is unlikely at the moment, but we will see how we go. We certainly won’t rush him back if he is not right, but it would be a nice bonus to have him in the side.
“We are really happy with the 17 we have got at the moment. If Dylan is a late inclusion, he is a class player. It is unlikely though.”
Barrett said winger Matt Wright will continue to be monitored after suffering a foot injury in the win over Souths on Monday night.
“Matt is another one will have to make a call on. He had a little bit of a foot complaint. It wasn’t as bad as we first thought, so he is a chance as well.”
Barrett said injured full-back Brett Stewart had also started rehab training following a successful knee operation. He has not played since the round 16 loss to the Cowboys in Townsville.
“Brett’s main focus is to get better. He is really happy that the club is winning again.
“He is a legend of the club and the boys love having him around. I just hope he gets better.”
Barrett said he was unsure whether Stewart would be available if the team did qualify for the finals.
“He would be pushing it. I’m sure he would give himself every chance,’’ Barrett said.
As for injured centre Steve Matai, Barrett said the neck surgery went well.
“We have sent Steve away for a couple of weeks and to get his head around with what he is doing,’’ Barrett added.
“He is a huge part of our club, an inspirational player. We all hope he will be back (for next year).”
The Sea Eagles are hoping hooker Matt Parcell will return from a hamstring injury against the Parramatta Eels next Friday night. He has not played since the round 15 loss to the Gold Coast Titans.
