When one thinks of Steve Matai, toughness is often a word used.

Battered, bashed, bruised every week, Matai is the Sea Eagles centre who plays through the pain barrier to not let his team-mates down.

His defence is brutal. Just ask South Sydney forward, Dave Tyrell, who was on the end of the ‘Hit of the Year’.

One of the Sea Eagles’ much loved sons, ‘Skivi’ played 19 games in 2015, bagging nine tries. He has now played 222 games in the maroon and white.

Matai missed the opening game of the season against the Parramatta Eels but made his presence felt as he scored tries against the Storm, Bulldogs and Panthers.

Towards the backend of the 2015 season, Matai’s courage was there to be seen after he suffered a broken nose during the 28-8 win over the Rabbitohs at Brookvale Oval. He followed this up by scoring consecutive tries against the Raiders in Canberra and the Eels at Brookvale.

Matai’s experience to the younger players coming through will be a major asset in 2016 under new Coach Trent Barret.
