The Sea Eagles are sweating on the fitness of centres Jamie Lyon and Steve Matai in the lead up to Manly’s blockbuster season opener against Parramatta.

The star centre pairing face a race against time to be fit for round one after Lyon joined Matai on Manly’s injury list following Saturday night’s trial against the Roosters.

The Sea Eagles captain suffered a slight strain in his right patella (knee) tendon late in the first half but is expected to lead the side out onto Pirtek Stadium next Friday night.

Despite recovering from off-season shoulder surgery quicker than expected, Matai, who has spent most of Manly’s pre-season in rehabilitation, together with Brenton Lawrence and Jamie Buhrer, will need to prove his fitness at training next week.

“Stevie Matai may or may not be back [for round one]. It will be close,” coach Geoff Toovey said.

“Jamie Buhrer may be close as well. Brenton Lawrence, again, they’re all going to be close. I don’t know if they are going to be available. If not the opening round then maybe one or two games in.”

Second-rower Tom Symonds left the field on Saturday night with a muscle tear in his left elbow and is optimistic about taking the field against Parramatta.

Delroy Berryman also sustained an injury and will be sidelined for up to six weeks with a tendon tear in his left knee.

Jorge Taufua has begun rehabilitation after having surgery to clean up loose cartilage in his right knee. The winger is likely to miss the opening two months of the season.
