Manly Warringah Sea Eagles front rower and club stalwart Jason King has today announced his retirement from the game at the end of the 2014 season.

King, a barnstorming front-rower who had a decorated career with Manly, played 235 first grade games, two State of Origins for NSW, along with three appearances for City Origin. He played in Manly’s premiership side in 2008 and was part of the 2011 squad that won the title. He also represented Manly at both the 2009 and 2012 world club challenges.

He made his first grade debut as a 20 year old back in 2001 and now 14 seasons later he hopes he has left a legacy that lasts at the club forever.

“The aura that surrounds the Manly Sea Eagles was built well before my time,” King said.

“People like Ken Arthurson, Bob Fulton, Geoff Toovey, Terry Randall and Steve Menzies come to mind.

“I hope in some small way over the past 14 seasons I have contributed to keeping this aura alive.”

Kingy, a life member of the Sea Eagles was forever grateful for the opportunity that he has been given from the Sea Eagles.  Not only the club itself, but also the support that he has received over his career from the sponsors, members and fans is something that he will always cherish.

“I would like to thank the club. I am a proud local junior and grew up idolising this club,” King said.

“To play professional rugby league for the Manly Sea Eagles was beyond my wildest dreams. Thank you for the opportunity.

“To the sponsors and staff of the club – I can’t thank you enough for the support you have shown me over the years, on and off the field.”

Sea Eagles coach Geoff Toovey heaped praise on the 2008 premiership winner, and believes that he has been an integral part of rebuilding the club into the success that it is today.

“I heard Jason say that he hopes that he has added to the aura of this great club,” Toovey said.

“I can guarantee Jason, that you have been part of the aura of this club and the culture of this club for many years and hopefully many more into the future.

“Jason came onto the scene when the club was struggling for success during the Northern Eagles days.

“Jason’s been here since, rebuilding this club into such the force that it is considered, particularly the last three to four years.”

King was forever thankful for the role that his family has played in supporting him and helping him shape his career.

“Last, but most importantly, I want to say thank you to my family,” he said.

“You have been unwavering in your support, showing guidance and direction at every corner. I hope you have enjoyed the ride as much as I have.

“A special thank you to my wife, Jackie, and my sixteen-month old son, William, who are here today.  Thank you for your unconditional love and support.”
