The NRL has today announced both the 2014 NRL and Holden Cup Academic Teams of the Year.

This is the first year that the NRL has taken the initiative of announcing a Holden Cup Academic Team of the year, as they look to celebrate not only the current NRL player’s achievements, but also, the achievements of the games future players.

In positive news for the Sea Eagles both Tom Symonds (Graduated Bachelor of Health and Exercise Science, University of NSW) and Brenton Lawrence (Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, Certificates III and IV in Training and Australian Institute of Workforce Development) were named in the NRL Academic Team of the year, whilst NYC captain Jack Delaney (Bachelor of Business and Commerce) was selected in the inaugural Holden Cup Team of the Year.

NRL-RLPA Welfare and Education Committee member Mark Coyne, said that education and workplace training was important for progression in the workforce.

“We have a wonderful group of incredibly successful NRL players here today who have shown that both commitment to the game and study are achievable,” Coyne said.

“Not only are these players a credit to themselves but are also an inspiration to all other young players showing that they too can balance further studies and a Rugby League Career.”

“I would like to congratulate not only Holden Cup players who have achieved a place on the team today, but all Holden Cup players who are part of the game’s new generation committing to both a career in football and further studies.”

Sea Eagles Player Welfare Manager Luke Williamson was equally as praising for the boys’ achievements.

“It’s a great achievement by Tom and Brenton to make the team considering the commitment that they have to make to their football and balancing it with their studies” Williamson said.

“For Jack Delaney to make the Inaugural Holden Cup Academic Team of the Year it is outstanding.  As captain, he is leading by example not only on the field but off it as well.”

Williamson, along with Career Advisor Judy Fitzgerald, pride themselves on supporting and providing players with the best opportunity to succeed outside of the training paddock.

With three Sea Eagles members named across both sides, it is a true testament to their work both on and off the footy field.
