The Sea Eagles have moved one step closer to claiming this year’s minor premiership with a 16-4 victory over the Broncos at Brookvale Oval on Friday night.

Having had to back up just five days after playing the Warriors in Auckland, Geoff Toovey’s men produced a resilient defensive display to hold off a lively Broncos outfit.

The Sea Eagles were left to rue a number of missed opportunities in the first 40 minutes, unable to capitalise on several golden chances.

Daly Cherry-Evans, Anthony Watmough and Jamie Lyon all butchering certain four pointers as both sides went into the break locked up at 4-all.

But it was Manly, led by Kieran Foran, showed just why they were the competition front runners, defending their line to claim an important two competition points.

The Sea Eagles donned their Wolverine inspired jerseys as part of the NRL’s Superhero round. Despite looking a little more like their opposition in the special yellow strip, Manly began the match in typical Maroon and White style.

Skipper Jamie Lyon scored Manly’s only try of the first half when he sliced through Brisbane’s edge defence to slide over in the corner.

In a low scoring first half, the Broncos managed to draw level eight minutes from the break as Daniel Vidot jumped above the pack to pop the ball back for Jack Reed, who planted the ball down centimetres inside the dead ball line.

But the Sea Eagles were finally able to convert their opportunities into four pointers as Peta Hiku dived on a perfectly waited grubber from Lyon 16 minutes into the second half.

Brett Stewart then extended his side’s lead 12 minutes from full time when Kieran Foran found a whole in the Broncos defence to send the fullback over the line.

Lyon then sealed the victory with a penalty goal one minute from full time.
